GBN 4, LA 3 (OT) Regional Finals

Loyola came back from a early goal by Glenbrook North to tie the contest on a restart by Spencer Remick (bottom left), and took a 2 goals to 1 lead into halftime thanks to a header by Peter Bolton (bottom right).
LA started the 2nd half scoring on an unbelievable endline shot by Dylan Remick inside the far post to go up 3-1. With the help of a PK and some other calls, GBN came back from the deficit to tie the score at 3 at the end of regulation. A Spartan goal with 4:04 left in overtime ended the season for the Ramblers. Loyola winds up with a record of 11-10-1. GBN, ranked 4th (of 282 AA teams) in the state in a recent on-line poll, advances to the New Trier Sectional with a record of 16-2-1. LA 6, Highland Park 3

Loyola's offense came alive as the Ramblers assured themselves of a winning season and a spot in the Regional Finals by beating Highland Park, 6-3. LA was in control right from the start with a close-in goal by Tommy Belton, only to have the Giants come right back with a deflection off a corner kick to tie things up. The rest of the opening stanza was all Loyola, as the offense dominated the last 30 minutes of the half. Two goals by Dylan Remick gave the Ramblers a comfortable 3-1 halftime lead.
Dylan Remick opened the second half scoring on a restart from about 20 yards out. Second half goals by Belton and Urosevic were matched by HP goals, although the Ramblers never relinquished control of the match. Scary haircuts on Aquino, Belton, Bolton, Cushwa, Kasten, Manganaro, Placek and Urosevic had the Giants apprehensive throughout the contest.
Loyola will square off against host Glenbrook North, a 7-0 winner over Northside College Prep, on Friday at 5 pm.

Deerfield soccer player killed in car crash

Deerfield High School midfielder Ross Trace, number 20 in picture at right, perished last Friday night in an automobile accident in Deerfield. Trace was a rear seat passenger in a car that crashed into a tree at high speed. There were five passengers in the vehicle; two are dead and three are hospitalized. Please keep them and their families in your prayers.

Some facts to remember:
* Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for American teenagers. In the last decade, over 68,000 teens have died in car crashes.
* Almost half of the crash deaths involving teen drivers occur when there are teen passengers in the car.
* Statistics show that teen driver death rates increase dramatically with each additional passenger in the car.
* Speed kills.
* For more information, see the Tribune Special Report "Teens at the wheel".

LA 2, Buffalo Grove 1

Dylan Remick's score from close-in range and Paul Aquino's laser beam (see image to left) from 30 yards out on a restart accelerated the Ramblers to a 2-0 halftime lead. Buffalo Grove scored with about 10 minutes left to cut the lead in half. Jonathon McCoy was outstanding between the pipes.

LA 7, Guerin Prep 2

Two goals by Mike McGuire led an offensive onslaught as the Ramblers bested Guerin Prep 7-2. Also scoring were Paul Aquino, Dylan Remick, Pat Kasten, Ernie Pumarejo and Nick Hendrickx. Loyola's record improves to 9-8-1.

LA 4, St. Rita 1

Aleks Urosevic's three goals led the Ramblers to a 4-1 victory over the St. Rita Mustangs. Mike McGuire tortured the twine for the final tally and Dylan Remick, Spencer Remick and Alex Panici chalked up assists. The Ramblers climb back up to .500 with an 8-8-1 record.

LA 4, Niles North 1

Three assists from Dylan Remick led the Ramblers to a 4-1 victory over Niles North. Goals by Aleks Urosevic, Ernie Pumarejo (see image to right), Tommy Belton and Alex Panici.

The Crusaders of Brother Rice edged Loyola 2-1 in double overtime. Coming back from a 1-0 halftime deficit, Aleks Urosevic knotted the score with an assist from Dylan Remick. The Ramblers, playing the last few minutes a man down, were unable to match Brother Rice's OT goal and fall to 6-7-1.

DeSmet Jesuit 2, LA 0

DeSmet Jesuit High School, ranked #3 in the state of Missouri, scored with less than a minute left in each half to beat Loyola, 2-0. Although controlling much of the game, DeSmet was held in check by an aggressive Rambler defense and great goalkeeping by Jonathon McCoy and Harry Sullivan. DeSmet's record improves to 9-1, while LA falls to 6-6-1. Photo by Terry Belton.

St. Ignatius 1, LA 0

Providence 2, LA 1

The Ramblers' record falls to 6-4-1.

Saturday, September 16, 2006

LA 2, Deerfield 2

The Ramblers came back from a second half 2-1 deficit to tie Deerfield at 2 goals apiece. The momentum seemed to swing a few times; LA dominated in the first and fourth quarters, and Deerfield was able to move the ball consistently right before and right after halftime. Aleks Urosevic scored on a first half PK and Alex Panici knocked one in later in the match.
This was another hard fought game, with strong physical play by Pat Kasten, Dave Cushwa, Tim Durso and Matt Placek.

Thursday, September 14, 2006

Mt. Carmel 2, LA 0

Mt. Carmel's two first half goals stood up to a 2nd half assault as the Caravan shut out the Ramblers. Loyola's record falls to 6-3.

Saturday, September 09, 2006

LA 4, Riverside-Brookfield 1

The Ramblers won the Niles West Zeedyk Invitational Tournament by beating RBHS 4-1 for their 6th consecutive win.
The RBHS Bulldogs started off the scoring after a corner kick, only to have Tommy Belton knot up the score after a long solo run. Loyola got things rolling with the wind at their backs when Spencer Remick put one into the far corner of the goal after a slick pass from Alex Panici to take the lead. Belton tallied again on a pass served up by Paul Aquino before half.
The Ramblers turned the ship into the wind for the 2nd half but were able to keep the offensive pressure on. John Manganaro's feed to a streaking Dylan Remick for a score was the highlight of the final stanza. Manganaro did a fine job filling in for an injured Peter Bolton at sweeper.

LA 4, Horlick 1

Loyola advanced to the finals of the Niles West Tourney by beating Horlick HS of Racine, Wisconsin, by a score of 4-1 .
Tommy Belton scored Loyola's only goal in the first half to tie the score at one.
Belton scored again after stripping the ball from the Horlick sweeper to start the 2nd half. Dylan Remick's header off of a long Dave Cushwa throw-in accounted for the third goal and Matt Placek's 40 yard run ended when he flicked the ball by a charging goalkeeper to complete the scoring.

LA 3, Amundsen 1

With another last minute opponent change due to the late arrival of our intended opponent Racine Horlick, Loyola took on Amundsen High School of Chicago.
A strong second half propelled the Ramblers to another come from behind victory. A Dave Cushwa header off a Pat Kasten free kick started the scoring. Dylan Remick then knocked in a Spencer Remick corner kick, and a few minutes later Dylan knocked a PK into the lower right corner of the goal after being taken down from behind in the box.
Saturday's 10 a.m. game will be against Horlick, who lost today to Clemente, 4-2, and lost Wednesday to Amundsen, 3-1 .
In the other bracket, Riverside-Brookfield is in control, although if St. Ignatius beats them Saturday, there could be a 3-way tie with Niles West.

Wednesday, September 06, 2006

LA 4, Clemente 0

Loyola beat Clemente in the first game of the Niles West Invitational Tournament 4-0. The pairings were adjusted so that LA won't face Catholic League foe St. Ignatius until the championship.
The first half was highlighted by a great save in the goal mouth by midfielder Dylan Remick, and the lone goal at the other end also by Dylan Remick.
The Rambler offense came alive in the second half once again, with goals by Aleks Urosevic, Tommy Belton and Spencer Remick.
The defense was strong throughout, trapping Clemente off-sides numerous times. An impressive goal line stand withstood six consecutive corner kicks at one point. The combined shutout adds to the resumes of keepers Jonathon McCoy and Harry Sullivan.

LA 2, Leyden 1

The Ramblers climbed back up to the .500 mark with a victory today over Leyden, 2-1. Two second half goals by sophomore Dylan Remick brought the Ramblers back from a 1-0 halftime deficit in the final game of the GBS Invite. All pictures courtesy of Annamarie Hendrickx.

Thursday, August 31, 2006

LA 2, Senn 0

Loyola put one in the win column Thursday evening with a strong second half against Senn. Dylan Remick fed Aleks Urosevic twice for scores as the offense came alive for the first time this season. The defense recorded its first shutout of the young season.
Loyola's final GBS tourney match will be against Leyden @ 11:00 am Saturday.

Wednesday, August 30, 2006

Stevenson 1, LA 0

Stevenson squeaked by the Ramblers 1-0 this afternoon in the GBS Invitational. For the most part, Stevenson's high powered offense was thwarted by a strong and physical Loyola D, but the Ramblers again had problems with a sputtering offense. Strong performances were turned in by both McCoy and Sullivan in the nets.

Tuesday, August 29, 2006

GBS 4, LA 2

Tournament host GBS took advantage of horrible playing conditions to beat the Ramblers 4-2. A steady rain left the field a mess and we were never able to execute properly. Goals by Cushwa and Belton. Sullivan and McCoy split the duties in goal.
Stevenson, our Wednesday (4 pm) opponent, beat Senn 6-0. We face Senn on Thursday at 5:30.

New IHSA Rule:
Yellow cards received during regular season or tournament competition must be counted. Once a player has accumulated five yellow cards, he is suspended for the next game. Once the player accumulates three additional yellow cards, he is suspended for the next two games, three more, he is suspended three games, etc. These are minimum penalties. All yellow cards must be reported by the official to the IHSA and the member School as currently practiced with all ejection reports.
At the start of the IHSA tournament series, a player will start with a clean slate if he has accumulated fewer than five yellow cards during the regular season. During the tournament series, once a player accumulates three yellow cards, he is suspended for the next game; three more yellows, suspended for two games, etc. If a player enters the tournament series having accumulated five or more yellow cards during the season, his yellow card count continues. Once he reaches eight total cards (regular season and IHSA tournament series) he is suspended for two games, eleven yellows - suspended for three games, etc.
Rationale: The committee reviewed area state associations practice of recording yellow cards throughout the season and state series. This is an effort to clean up the behavioral issues in the game of soccer.
